A serial entrepreneur, Kaneka Subberwal is a month away from showcasing Bahraini talent internationally. This woman’s  joie de vivre is contagious. Her passion for the arts exudes from every fibre of her being. I am honoured to share her story on Mood Board Magazine.

Originally from India, Kaneka had been traveling to Dubai, until she realized Bahrain was not spotlighted in the Middle Eastern Art World. Driven by this, she launched the first ArtBahrain art fair in 2015 through her consulting firm ArtSelect, under patronage of HRH Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa.

“When we talk Middle-Eastern Art, we usually think about Dubai, Qatar etc… I wanted Bahraini artists to be in the spotlight”

Now, Kaneka will bring Bahraini artists to London. ArtSelect held an open call across Bahrain for the first Bahrain Art Across Borders (BAAB) exhibition, to be held in London. The panel, composed of Janet Rady, Dr. Aissa Deebi and Tim Cornwell, selected 17 artists, of both genders, working on different medias. BAAB will present the selected artists with a preview at the Victoria and Albert Museum on the 25th of May.

“BAAB aims to showcase Bahraini art and a range of Bahraini artists, working on different media. We don’t look at age, gender, we look at the artwork.”

Baab-Sh Mohammed bin Issa Al Khalifa chairman of Tamkeen -a semi-governmental organization- has been a key supporter for this major event. Tamkeen is invested in the artistic growth of Bahrain by making it accessible to a global audience.

“You don’t have to be an art buyer or an art expert to go to a gallery and enjoy art. We want to remove those stereotypes and allow people to just go for the beauty of it, without thinking they have to buy it.”
