Bon Appétit! Discover One of England’s Finest Afternoon Tea

The finest handmade patisseries created by an international master pastry chef, combined with a selection of artisan sandwiches and a trio of savoury bites – Castle Howard’s new luxurious afternoon tea promises to give visitors to the historic house one of the finest afternoon tea experiences in the country.

The new afternoon tea is available on selected dates throughout the season, and has been created to offer visitors an exquisite afternoon dining experience in the stately home’s Grecian Hall. With savouries, sandwiches, scones and sweet cakes served on traditional cake stands and fine china, using the best locally sourced ingredients, each mouthful promises a taste sensation on a par with the finest British restaurants.

The master pastry chef behind the new afternoon tea experience is Vanessa Wade, who joined Castle Howard earlier this year having served as head pastry development chef at Betty’s Café Tea Room and working internationally at Gordon Ramsay’s The London in New York, and in South Africa. Vanessa joins the new chef team at Castle Howard led by Head Chef David Haynes, who has also joined from Betty’s Café Tea Room, and working alongside Sous Chef Matt Meek, formerly of Provenance Inns.

The picture-perfect patisseries include blueberry pavlova with a lemon cream filling, Castle Howard rhubarb and almond crumble trifle, and Belgian chocolate and raspberry layered cake. The sweets are accompanied by a selection of sandwiches and savoury delicacies including a Yorkshire Fountains Gold cheddar scone topped with chive crème fraiche, wild sea trout and pickled cucumber. The tea is all hand-prepared and baked in Castle Howard’s kitchen.

The launch of the new afternoon tea also marks the start of a new approach to food across Castle Howard’s outlets, from the beautifully refurbished Fitzroy Room within the house itself, to the Courtyard Café and even the farm shop.

The Afternoon Tea ticket, which includes entry into the house and gardens, costs £43.95 per person, or £25.00 for Castle Howard members.
