With a background in jazz and analogue music, Marco Barotti’s work has gone into a new dimension: shaping architecture through sound.

In collaboration with creatives such as Asphalt Piloten and Plastic Fantastic –a Berlin based  firm dedicated to temporary architecture through inflatable designs- Marco Barotti envisioned sound and space as one single element. His musical taste along his interest for architecture gave birth to a hybrid creature standing between architecture and sound.

“Shaping space through sound and playing with it is the beauty of the design process”

Swans

Eight satellite dishes as a symbol of mainstream mass media emerge as a subtle intervention within the natural environment. They ironically float peacefully on water and are brought to life by sound with base frequencies and wind instruments.

Mexico City 2016: where the actual architecture becomes the device. The produced vibrations by different frequencies transform the space into a large scale speaker membrane.

The generated frequencies are translated into visuals that are projected onto the membrane and provide the viewers a multi-sensory experience.

Breathing Volume

Two 4 x 2 meter walls come to life and are designed to constantly change volume and the subwoofers transform the frequencies into deep sounds that become the soul of this project and give the visitor the impression to be inside a living creature.

Sound of Light

Designed for the former music pavilion in Hamm, Germany, the “Sound of light” intervention is a dynamic sculpture, composed by six columns which allow sunlight as the only source of light.

The incoming light brightens up the space and translates into six RGB and CMYK colours which simultaneously convert themselves from visible to audible frequencies. Sound of light generates a complete experience to the visitor, where the overlay of colours, shapes, sounds and vibrations work along with light.

Marco Barotti’s next projects seek to shape architecture loosing the physical space completely and without even mentioning the word “architecture”. He aims to play with space, working as an organic structure something that is present.
